Whacking Jacko

My relationship with Peter Jackson deteriorated over a relatively short space of time. In my eyes he changed from an amiable guy to an egotistical bighead within twelve months as the team improved and moved up the league. He just seemed to disappear up his own arse and I got the distinct impression that many others in the dressing room felt the same way.

We flew out of the blocks at the start of the 1998/99 season and were top of the table after ten games. But I was already thinking about moving on as I began to feel that I was being edged out. One morning I had a trifling disagreement with Jacko during training and I then served a one-match ban for a game with Oxford United before coming back for a game with Stockport County. Barry Horne had taken over as skipper for the game I missed and we were beaten, not that it was down to Barry being skipper. I was back in the team for Stockport and as we were sitting in the dressing room about an hour before kickoff, Jacko came in with Taff. He read the team out as normal: ‘number 5, Andy Morrison; number 6, Dave Phillips; number 7, Barry Horne, captain . . . ’

I felt the rage building. My pride was hurt and I felt that Jacko had shafted me. He should have had the balls to tell me earlier instead of dropping a bombshell like that in front of the lads. Maybe he didn’t have the balls or maybe he didn’t think good manners are that important. Who knows? I’ll never know and I wasn’t in the mood to sit down and discuss it with him over a cup of tea. Instead I went out and gave one of the best performances of my career, simply because I was so angry. I played like a man possessed. I couldn’t believe he had humiliated me in public like that. When he had been going through the side the lads looked knowingly at each other, because they knew I wouldn’t take it too well.

It made me think about how Lee Sinnott must have felt when I first arrived and took the armband from him. But, while I could accept the decision, I couldn’t accept the way it had happened. We drew 1–1 with Stockport and the next morning I went to see Jackson in his office to discuss the previous evening’s events.

‘I need a word.’

He looked up and rather smugly replied, ‘I’m busy at the moment.’

‘You’ve got ten minutes, then I’m coming back in whether you’re busy or not.’

I waited, blood boiling, and then when exactly ten minutes had passed, I went back in. By now I had got wind that Manchester City had enquired about me, so I could afford to be even less tactful than usual.

‘When you first came here Jacko, the lads would have walked over broken glass for you. Now they wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire, you bigheaded, arrogant cunt.
